Can you post a screenshot of your desktop? Sounds like the uxtheme.dll file got buggered. You can set your theme back to the default Windows XP, or even Windows Classic, then restore your uxtheme.dll file from a backup. There should be one in C:\Windows\i386 if you have that folder...

I don't know what you've done, but I had this happen to me once but was even worse - all my windows were black. I rebooted into safe mode and restored my uxtheme.dll from a backup. To find backups, you have to open Windows Explorer and go to Tools --> Folder Options and uncheck the 'show hidden' and 'protected operating system' options. Then search for uxtheme and you should find at lease one or two.
Any named uxtheme.dl_ are compressed. From the command line, extract via:
expand -R uxtheme.dl_
Then copy the extracted file to C:\Windows\System32.
Or, if you have System Restore enabled, why not just restore back to the day/time just before you tried patching your uxtheme.dll file? That should work.
Only other thing I can think of is get pre-patched uxtheme.dll file and copy it over. Remember you have to reboot.
There is one other possibility - your uxtheme.dll file is fine but you somehow messed up the shell files in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes, possibly by extracting a new theme in the root folder instead of it's own folder. I've seen that happen before...
