I bought Vista Ultimate 64bit and I did find that it was slow after installing just a few programs. And my computer is no slouch! Core 2 Duo @2.5Ghz, 4GB Ram, 600GB Raid 1 drives all on an Intel BadAxe 2 board, with ATI X1900 Crossfire vids.
Right after a fresh install, it's plenty fast. But slowed down considerably after installing all my regular software. I also found that any file copy operations were very, very slow. Way too slow considering my drives are fast and Raid 1. Plus, constant hard drive thrashing that I had no explaination for. Just seemed to be reading/writing to the hard drive for no reason. Maybe it was indexing files for search or something. Good news is a recent update for Vista did address the file copy speed and it doesn't thrash the drives as much and overall is much faster now.
I also found that upgrading from 2GB Ram to 4GB ram AND using a 4GB USB thumbdrive configured for ReadyBoost also helped overall performance, and was relatively cheap (around $95 bucks). Even if you only have 1GB or 2GB Ram, go get a fast USB thumbdrive and plug it in. Vista will automatically ask if you want to use it to speed up your computer (ReadyBoost). Say Yes and away you go!
