Paul Thurrott writes that IE is removable in build 7048 of Windows 7. Under Add and Remove Windows Features in the control panel, there is an option to remove IE 8, and according to some comments left on the page, IE 8 is completely removable not just hidden. The rendering engine is left in place for apps that depend on it, otherwise it is gone should you choose to remove it.
