Microsoft to alpha test Office 14 before end of year

Microsoft to alpha test Office 14 before end of year
| Posted By:

Microsoft will begin alpha testing the next version of Office in November or December, according to a blog posting by a Microsoft employee that was later pulled from the Web. According to the blog posting, by Hayley Rixon, who works on the Microsoft business intelligence team, Microsoft is calling for people to be part of a technology adoption program (TAP) that will give them an early opportunity to test the monitoring and analytics components of Office PerformancePoint Server.
The TAP for this product will be a part of the TAP for Office 14, the alpha test of which will begin in the "November/December timeframe this year," according to the blog posting. Office PerformancePoint Server is business performance analysis software that will be a part of the Office 14 release. While the blog posting was live on Microsoft's Technet site on Monday afternoon Eastern time, by afternoon on the West coast the Web site was no longer working. The post also no longer appears on Rixon's blog.
Microsoft could not be reached for comment Tuesday about the site no longer being active. However, on Monday through its public relations firm Microsoft said that while the Office team is working on the next version, "it is too early to discuss specific features, capabilities or timing" for the product. The deadline for submissions to be a part of the Office PerformancePoint Server TAP is Aug. 28, according to the post.

Windows 7 Server to be 'minor release'

Windows 7 Server to be 'minor release'
| Posted By:

Microsoft said on Monday in the US that the server version of Windows 7 would not be a major release and will bear the name Windows Server 2008 R2. In the past, Microsoft has used R2 monikers to signify a product with a few new features, as opposed to major changes to a product. Microsoft declined to discuss what will be in Windows Server 2008 R2, but a spokesman confirmed that it is the server version of Windows 7. The release was due sometime in 2010, Microsoft said.
The server move calls into question just how different Windows 7 is going to be from Windows Vista on the desktop side. Steven Sinofsky, the head of development for the desktop version of Windows, has said that Windows 7 on the PC side would not make major changes to things like the kernel and driver model, but has maintained that it would be a major release of Windows.
Microsoft has said that the desktop version of Windows 7 would include a new multitouch interface, but has not talked about other features. The software maker confirmed its naming plans, following a report by ZDNet.com blogger Mary Jo Foley. Initially Foley reported that Microsoft was skipping its minor R2 release and moving straight to its next major release. However, Microsoft clarified that it indeed saw Windows 7 on the server side as a minor release.

Japan: iPod Nanos Pose Risk of Combustion

Japan: iPod Nanos Pose Risk of Combustion

It's not the first time we've heard about it, and it probably won't be the last, but Apple's spectacularly successful iPod Nano v1 has, once again, set minor fires due to overheating, this time in Japan. According to Agence France-Presse, the Japanese Economy, Trade, and Industry Ministry has received two new reports of Nanos spontaneously combusting, bringing the total number of reported cases in Japan to 14. In a ministry press release (Japanese), four models were indicted as being associated with the fires: MA004J/A, MA005J/A, MA099J/A and MA107J/A. "Our ministry told Apple to improve its technological development and probe the cause of the incidents so that similar incidents do not happen again," a ministry official said.
While Apple was not available for immediate comment, sources state that the company is not ready for a recall, but will still replace defective units. Nevertheless, Apple is clearly aware of possible heat issues with its iPod line of products, especially when charging, warning on its site that "...charging your iPod, iPod nano or iPod shuffle while in certain carrying cases may generate excess heat." One user learned this fact the hard way when he woke up at 2AM, fire alarms blaring, and a small fire forming in the middle of his bedroom. Still, the amount of cases seems rather isolated, leaving the unanswered question of whether there is an actual defect, or if the fires can simply be attributed to PEBKAC.

Theres a lot to building an org structure for a large team, but the most important part is planning the work of the team. This planning is integral to realizing the goal of improving the overall consistency and togetherness for Windows 7. So rather than think of one big org, or two teams, lets say that the Windows 7 engineering team is made up of about 25 different feature teams. Read more..

MobileMe service extended again, Apple admits mistakes

MobileMe service extended again, Apple admits mistakes
| Posted By:

In a move you don't often see from a large corporation, Apple has sent an email to all MobileMe subscribers, offering an additional 60 days free of charge for the service. This is in addition to the original trial, plus more free time after the original launch to make up for a day of lost service, and again in addition to the extra time some subscribers got for an excessive charge to their credit card. Yes, that's right: some subscribers get an unprecedented 180 days of free MobileMe service.
'We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make,' the email states. 'To recognize our users' patience, we are giving every MobileMe subscriber as of today a free 60 day extension. This is in addition to the one month extension most subscribers have already received. We are working very hard to make MobileMe a great service we can all be proud of. We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our finest hour, and we truly appreciate your patience as we turn this around.'
The email concludes with a link to this support page, which further explains the service extension. However, what will surprise many people even more than the extension of service is this line: 'We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our finest hour, and we truly appreciate your patience as we turn this around.' I'd say when trying to turn things around, giving out free service is a good place to start!
